The shapefile viewer allows point, polyline or polygonal shapefile data to be loaded and plotted on a UK map. The database record associated with each geometric object can be displayed by clicking on the object. The British National Grid coordinates of the location are also included. Shapefiles encoded with WGS84 latitude and longitude, WGS84 web mercator or BNG coordinates are supported and the projection is identified automatically.
Polygonal shapefile data can be simplified to a user-configurable resolution when loaded. The resulting polygons contain a reduced number of edges which are within the specified distance to the vertices of the initial polygons. Choosing a distance of zero means that the shapefile is loaded without simplification.
The file selection icon allows data to be chosen; each selection should include files with the .prj, .dbf and .shp extensions which have the same stem name. The map control also supports drag and drop of shapefile data. The die icon allows example shapefile data to be loaded at random from the OS Boundary-Line dataset.
Sources of shapefile data include: OS Data Hub, ONS Open Geography Portal, Natural England Open Data Geoportal and Historic England Listing Data.
This page does not use cookies or otherwise track you. All processing of shapefile data is performed on the local machine. Basic usage data is collected but this is anonymised via a one-way function.
